Which Counties See the Most Kentucky Motorcycle Crashes?
In October 2023, WBKO found that Warren County was one of the most dangerous Kentucky counties for motorcyclists. In 2023 alone, there were a total of 5 fatal motorcycle crashes, making up almost half of Warren County’s total fatal accidents that year.
Coupled with WBKO’s reporting, we can identify some of the most deadly counties and locations through a study conducted by the Kentucky Transportation Center. When it comes to Warren County, the study found that the most dangerous location for bikers is on US 231, near mile point 9.1-10.1. This single mile saw eight motorcycle crashes between 2006 and 2008.
Kentucky County Crash Rates From 2005 to 2009
The Kentucky Transportation Center analyzed crash rates for each county. They compared the number of crashes per 10,000 residents of each county.
Based on their analysis, the counties with the most crashes per 10,000 residents were:
- Trimble
- Caroll
- Mason
- Calloway
- McCracken
On the other hand, the counties that had the lowest motorcycle crash rates were:
- Hickman
- Green
- Wayne
- Oldham
- Kenton
Kentucky County Fatality Statistics
In addition to evaluating crash rates, the Kentucky Transportation Center analyzed which counties have the highest numbers of motorcycle fatalities.
Out of 775 fatal motorcycle crashes from 2000 to 2009, the most deadly counties were:
- Jefferson — 109
- Fayette — 26
- Warren — 26
- McCracken — 21
- Pike — 21
Recent Kentucky Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle accidents have steadily been on the rise in Kentucky in recent years. From 2012 to 2021, there were 952 motorcycle-related deaths in Kentucky, 13% of all of Kentucky’s road fatalities.
The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety stated that there were a total of 1,575 motorcycle crashes in 2022 alone, leading to 99 deaths. The Perry County Coroner indicated the vast majority of these accidents were entirely preventable, and many were caused by drivers texting and engaging in other distractions.
Additionally, the American Automobile Association (AAA) indicated that there was likely an increase in motorcycle crashes and deaths in 2023 compared to the previous year. AAA’s data shows that from January to April 2022, there were a total of 194 motorcycle crashes. In 2023, the number of accidents from that same period jumped to 231. Tragically, 15 of those 231 accidents involved motorcycle fatalities.
We don’t yet have sufficient data to determine whether this trend will continue into 2024, but it’s clear that bikers and motorists alike need to operate their vehicles cautiously to mitigate the risk of causing deadly crashes.
